VISION on the Pine Ridge Reservation with Community Partner: Re-Member

Build. Learn. Grow. Hope.

Why Join?

Celebrating its 40th Anniversary, the VISION program has provided countless opportunities for 欧美无码 students to engage in a world beyond their own. This year's offering to the Pine Ridge Reservation with Re-Member is exciting in its own way as it is a partnership that has been in the making for nearly 17 years, finally coming to fruition. As outlined in their mission statement, the organization calls us to "Re-Member the past as we build a better tomorrow with the Oglala Lakota Nation."

Knowing that we must understand our history in order to work towards a better world for all, we are piloting a unique partnership for this experience. While not a requirement for your participation, we are co-promoting this experience with Dr. McCutchen's HIST 224: Native American History that will be taught during spring semester. We are encouraging reciprocal engagement between the course and the spring break experience. Please find a description of the course below:

This course examines the historical experiences of North America’s Indigenous peoples with respect to their cultures. It focuses upon Native Americans as active agents in producing their history both before and after European contact, not just victims of white oppression and/or abstract social forces.

Topics and themes include: Native cultural diversity on the eve of European contact; the dynamics of early Indigenous-European encounters; the political, spiritual, and gendered dimensions of Native accommodation and resistance; forced removal; the Dakota War, the systematic placement of Native children in boarding schools and foster care; Indigenous self-determination in the twentieth century through gaming and other economic ventures; the formation of modern Federal Indian Law.

We look forward to learning alongside you!
